The history of Dhaka is 400 years old.  At present, Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.  It has a long history.  It is difficult to say anything specific about Dhaka during the pre-Muslim period.

However, according to various sources, Dhaka developed as a city center during the Sultanate period.  It gained prominence after gaining the status of provincial capital during the Mughal period.

During the Mughal period, Dhaka had a dramatic rise and development.  Firstly, due to its advantageous geographical location, as the capital and later as the sub-capital of a rich and affluent province.  Its political and administrative importance, its rich internal and external trade and its famous products especially muslin.

The new trend of development and the beginning of a new era of prosperity marked the beginning of a new chapter in the urban history of Dhaka from the 1840s.  This journey of urban development has continued ever since.

Architecture The construction of beautiful mosques in the Indo-Islamic style has been on the rise in Dhaka since the Mughal period.  Due to the large number of mosques, Dhaka became known as the 'city of mosques'.

Dhaka, the city of mosques, did not develop overnight.  In 1832, the then Magistrate of Dhaka George Henry Walter mentioned in a report that the number of mosques in Dhaka at that time was 153.  Whose number is gradually increasing.

Then in the 19th century, although the construction of some mosques was less, this style of construction took a new turn during the Pakistan period.  Later the construction of the mosque started due to the large number of Muslims.

Gradually Dhaka became a city of innumerable mosques.  It is difficult to give an accurate answer to the question of how many mosques there are in Dhaka, the 'city of mosques' at present.  According to the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, there are currently 10,000 mosques in Dhaka.
