Fish rain

Millions of fish fall from the sky like rain!

Many of us have seen hailstones and clouds of cotton floating in the sky.  And snowfall is nothing new. You may have seen meteor showers from time to time.  But do you ever see ‘fish rain’?

Fish rain is not one or two, millions of fish fall from the sky.  Thousands of fish are scattered on the road, in front of the house, on the roof!  Not every time, but every year millions of people in Honduras in Central America witness such incidents.

Between May and July, such ‘fish rains’ occur every year in different parts of Honduras.  The locals call this event ‘Lulvia de Peces’.  The Spanish word means ‘rain of fish’.  Fish, squid, frogs and many more are falling from the sky!  The local administration has to clear the roads by bringing down people at this time.

Jose Subirana, a Christian pastor, came to Honduras in the mid-nineteenth century (1757-184).  In his time, most of the people in the region lived in poverty.  He prayed to God to help them.  The people of the region began to believe that God sent "fish rain" from the sky to alleviate poverty after the prayers of Hose Subirana.

Why is ‘fish rain’ in Honduras?

It is said that in 1970 a special team was sent to Honduras by the National Geographic Channel.  The members of that group confirmed the truth of this 'rain of fish'.

Those members of the National Geographic Channel said that all the fish that fall from the sky in this region are not marine fish.  They are freshwater fish.  That is, the fish that fall like rain from the sky are the fish of a freshwater body like a river, pond or lake.

Most fish are almost the same species.  However, the National Geographic Channel authorities did not acknowledge sending a team to Honduras in 1980 to verify the authenticity of the "fish rain".

The Atlantic Ocean is about 200 miles away from it.  Many believe that a tornado blows fish from different parts of the Atlantic Ocean into the region.  But how is such an event possible every year?  There is still ambiguity about this incident.
